Well most of us are MMORPG fans, I'd also make the assumption many of us have played some kind of themed RPG games? So for you which where the best, which stand out in your memory, which would you like to see remade and so on.

Myself I remember playing my first RPG back on the Spectrum, well I'd call it an RPG, but it was obviously quite old style and not looking like any kind of RPG we'd recognise today. It was a game called Valhalla, where you moved your hero around a world trying to find you way to treasure, avoiding or defeating enemies set around the myth of Norse Mythology. It was around the same time I was getting into RPG tabletop games and wargamming, and it has led me down a very strong RPG themed path.

Some of the stand out games for me have been.

Ishar and Ishar 2, both classic RPG games on the Amiga. They'd look poor today, but I remember them being enthralling and deep games to play at the time. Both excellent sandbox games long before magazine writers coined the phrase for GTA 3. You could literally do what you wanted, doors permitting and had vast worlds to explore.

Dungeons and Dragons - Warriors of the Eternal Sun on the Megadrive. The first D&D game that actually worked well, I'd had games on the Comm 64 and Amiga that didn't seem that great. But the console element made this a great game to play. Oddly I picked this up for £4 just reccently on ebay, and although it looks ancient, it is still offers a lot of fun.

Warsong on the Megadrive. (Well Genesis officially as it was a US only release I had imported.) The first tactical RPG style game I played. A style of game that has become a fave of mine leading through many games including Shining Force, Vandal Hearts and up until most reccently Disgaea.

Secret of Mana on the SNES. Although I also enjoyed a Link to the Past, this game was my fave japanese style RPG for a long time, that was until I played.

Final Fantasy VII on the PS1. One of my fave games of all time for a long time, took up way too much of my time as a young man, probably only now beaten by the ammount of time I've played WoW. Although oddly I've never enjoyed any Final Fantasy game since this one, I do wonder if the style has passed me by. The walking around, suddenly in combat thing annoys me now. I like to see my enemies coming and make the call if I fight or not. The story was epic though.

Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowwind, and then Oblivion. The last two big RPG's I've played before WoW. Both where excellent games, and I enjoyed them although didn't compleate either. Just due to time restrictions at the time I was playing them, plus taking too much of an advantage of the 'sandbox' worlds they offered. :stuart:

Since I've played WoW, I find I struggle with standard RPG's. Its odd I try them still, but the worlds seem empty, thus I really only try new MMO's now when I'm looking for a new RPG fix. Although as well as getting Warriors of the Eternal Sun, I got the Megadrive 360 title with both Shining Force games on.
So maybe I'm going backwards. I know I'd love to find a decent amiga emulator to run Ishar 2 again and in my dreams I'd have loved to see a remake. :)
Sadly Silmarils are long deceased as a games company. :(

So what RPG's stand out for you on either PC/Console or other. I'm interested to hear folks views. :sorcerer:

I have been a big fan of PC & Console RPGs over the years. While I may not be able to drum up a comprehensive lost, I think I can remember all of my favorites fairly easily.

Darklands (PC): Darklands is one of my all-time favorite PC RPGs. It had a wonderfully complex and adaptive character creation system that was really interesting to tinker around with. Combat had a good flow to it and the game was really wonderful for how open it felt. Darklands is a RPG set in a fanciful medieval Germany (around the 14-15th century). The game also had very good music, changing seasons and a lot of other cool features IMO.

Chrono Trigger (Console): One of my all-time favorite console games. I recently even picked up a new copy of it for the DS port and will be giving it a try. Surprisingly I have found that the gameplay & quality of Chrono Trigger have not dropped off over time, a real good sign of a masterpiece IMO.

Dragon Quest (Series) (Console): I have been very fond of the Dragon Quest series of games (called Dragon Warrior occasionally in the US). While the original is a favorite out of nostalgia of course, I have really enjoyed the 3rd, 4th and 5th games in the series the most. The DS ports of 4 and 5 are excellent.

Bard's Tale I & II (PC): The old original Bard's Tale games were a heck of a lot of fun. Build a party of adventurers, kill monsters, explore dungeons... these games were a heck of a lot of fun. I particularly liked Bard's Tale 2 because you could create a party of all monsters (or illusions) for kicks.

Sure there are others I would like to list (a heck of a lot actually) but these were the first couple that came to mind and I'll leave it at that for the moment. Gotta leave things for other people to ramble on about of course! :respect:

It's almost criminal that no-one so far has mentioned Planescape: Torment. From Black Isle Studios, released in 1999, it has without doubt the best story, dialogue and character depth of any PC game I've played.

Certainly an aged game by the standards of today's Oblivion and the like, but definitely worth a look, not just by RPG fans but gamers alike.

I'd heard about it Mordechi, my mate Ravenblade was all over it for a while I seem to remember. Sadly I didn't own a PC until 2002, so I probably missed out on a lot of classic RPG action.

I'm pretty young compared to a lot of old-school RPGers, so the best I can produce is Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as not only my favourite RPG but my favourite game ever.

In fact it's pretty difficult choosing between OoT, WW and TP, but I think OoT snatches victory by a whisker.

I've also played Oblivion, which is very entertaining although with some things that bug me like ridiculously steep level/creature difficulty curves, but in all a lovely game, especially in the depth they went into in dialogue and other small details.

And was not Pokemon an RPG? I've loved the whole Pokemon series, but first generation Red and Blue were massively fun as the first ones published.
If in doubt, shoot it.

I love nearly all Classic RPGs from the Super NES-Days. xD
Specially the Mana-Games.
(We have every Game, that has something to do with Mana. xD

And for MMO:
My first MMO was Ragnarök Online, which I'm playing still today.
Well, not really playing. I'm Scripting My own Server atm. =P
While playing RO a Friend of Mine pushed Me to start WoW, so i tried a few Month.
Hell, it's boring. xD
Stupid Faceroller-Games. >_>

Wow... well, I've played a lot... My first was one of the Ultima series, back when the computer screen had green and black as its only colors (Apple 2GS :p )... don't remember which one in the series it was, but I continued to play them up to 8, I think. But they don't rank among my favorites.

I also played Planescape: Torment, but it didn't do much for me- much like all the rest of the D&D games, for some reason.

Final Fantasy 2 or 3 on the SNES, can't remember the number... I had a blast with that one. It was just about as epic as FF7 to me- both games rank in my favorites. When FF7 came out, I played it for 72 hours straight :p I'm the same way with the rest of the FF's, Druchii- I hated 8's magic system, 9 didn't appeal to me at all, and I couldn't finish 10 because Tidus was a whiny *****. Granted, Cloud was angsty, but he wasn't whiny on the level of Tidus.

I loved WoW, back in the good ol' days. Some of the best RP I've had was with a human-only guild that used the Scarlet Crusade as its "parent" organization. They styled themselves a splinter faction that left the Scarlet Crusade because they were even more hardcore than the parent. That was good stuff.

Probably my favorite RPG, aside from FF7, is Arcanum, by Troika. It still has a huge following of people who continue to add to it, much like Oblivion/Morrowind (which I played, and didn't particularly enjoy...)

Deus Ex is another one that I loved, even though it was a RPG FPS. I enjoy both genres, and to have a futuristic RPG handled in a FPS way made me very happy :p Hellgate: London had the same sort of potential, but failed in execution.

I'm sure I'm missing some other classics that I love, but I'll add those in later :p

Lets take you all back in time...

Kings Quest Series
Heroes Quest Series
Space Quest Series
Zork I and II
Fallout I & II (Not a fan of 3, while a decent game I don't think it deserved the accolades it got)
Phantasy Star II
Zelda OoC
Baldur's Gate I & II
Mass Effect
Snatcher (Sega CD Baby!)
Vampire Masquerade

-In response to Planescape Torment, it was a good RPG, but soooo painfully slow.

-Ah Arcanum, that was a different game for sure. I wouldn't rate it up there with the best IMO, but it was still an entertaining game.

Oh yeah! Hero's Quest/Quest for Glory! Those were the days. And the Fallouts and Mass Effect are in the favorites...

I wouldn't put V:tM up there, but thats just because I play the version of the game that requires books, and neither of the computer versions stacks up to my scrutiny :p

Hmm we actually played the Hero Quest board game at my local WH club when we somehow found it in the back of a store cupboard.

I was a wizard, and going really well until I used a spell to walk through walls to get away from a corridor full of beasties, only to find myself trapped in a room with 2 and a boss :laser:

Hehe I did go on about Planescape alot ^^

1, Dragon age - Really fun game, loads of choice and tonnes of dialog with npc in your group.

2, Planescape - Was slow but a vast story arc to it.

3, BG2 and Throne of Bhaal - Epic, Dragons, Demons, Gods and space hamsters !

4, Lost Odyssey - Another epic game with alot of history for the main character and good solid storyline

5, Mass Effect - If it can be considered a RPG then Guns, crazy mind powers and ancient robots.

My console gaming started in 1990 when getting a NES for christmas, that quickly evolved from there. It was not untill 1997 that I finaly found the joy in console rpg gaming though. That game came in the form of Final Fantasy VII. FFVII is to me the holy grail of all electronic gaming, be it console, PC or other.

PC gaming slowly started somewhere around the end of the 90's for me, with playing games at friends houses (UFO: Enemy Unknown was the first ever PC game I played, I still play it sometimes ). My first encounter with pc rpg's happend somewhere between 2000 and 2002, and the game was Fallout 1. For me, Fallout 1 is to PC gaming, like FFVII is to console gaming. But... unlike FFVII, FO1 has actually been "dethroned" from the nr 1 pc games spot (by Mass Effect), but it's still my holy grail in PC RPG's. Posted Image

So, my top 20 RPG games list:

01: FFVII (PS)
02: FFX (PS2)
03: FFXII (PS2)
04: Mass Effect (PC)
05: Suikoden I (PS)
06: Suikoden II (PS)
07: FFVIII (PS)
08: Suikoden V (PS2)
09: Suikoden Tactics (PS2)
10: Fallout 1 (PC)
11: Fallout 2 (PC)
12: Fallout Tactics (PC)
13: Dragon Age Origins (PC)
14: Exit Fate (PC)
15: The Last Remnant (PC)
16: Vampire The Masqurade - Bloodlines (PC)
17: Diablo 1 (PC)
18: Diablo 2 (PC)
19: Final Fantasy IX (PS)
20: Suikoden IV (PS2)
21: Secrets of Mana (SNES)

Yes, I know... that's 21 games in the top 20, but thats because I felt I atleast wanted to give a shoutout to Secrets of Mana as well. Because befor 1997, and FFVII, SoM was the ONLY console rpg game I really liked (wonder how things would have been if I had had contact with the FF 1-6 befor finding FFVII).

And yes, I know, both Mass Effect and The Last Remnant are technicly console games, but I played both of those on PC, so to me they are PC games. If nothing else it really shows how dominant console games are in my top lists.

Also, Suikoden III is not on the list because that game never came to Europe, so I never had a chance to play it. Posted Image

I am sure people are wondering right now "But what about Baldurs Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Eldar Scroll etc". Well, as much as I like those games, all of them have "flaws" which makes them not good enough to be in my top game lists.

Take the Eldar Scroll series for example, yes, they are good, but so far I have never finished a single one of them, because I eventualy get bored with them, long befor even reaching halfway through the games.

As for Baldurs Gate and Neverwinter Night, I have never finished none of those games either (or any other game with the same flaw as these). That is partly also due to becomming bored with them, but that is not the main reason. No, the main reason is something worse... something SO MUCH worse... they are... based on Dungeons and Dragons. Yes... you heard me right... THAT DnD. To me, DnD is probably the most overrated PnP system ever. And in my opinion it's pretty much inferior to every other PnP rule system I have I have ever played... especialy compared to the Swedish PnP systems I play/played. Granted, DnD is probably the most played PnP system in the world of all times, but that makes no difference to me.

I'm no big fan of RPG, but i liked Fallout. I have always liked the option to do all mission differently. In Fallout, i mostly talked...not necessarily the "good guy", but it was just amusing how you always managed to talk everybody to help you and persuade the potential attackers to leave you alone.

I have taken great pains not to laugh at the actions of aliens, nor to weep at them or to hate them, but to understand them.

It saddens me greatly that we must take arms against the peoples of the galaxy. By their deaths, they deny themselves the liberation that is only to be found in total surrender to the Greater Good.
