Yet again, our outstanding members are on the crawl for information and one such member, Something Wycked, was able to dig up a rumor on how PvP will play out in Warhammer 40K MMO. Before you read any of the information below, Warhammer 40K Online and Something Wycked do not state this as fact. This is strictly rumor and may not even be valid, but the information provided is interesting and deemed news worthy.

Everything I'm going to talk about I learned from gameinsider.com, before it turned into a plain black page. And as I look at 40k Online as primarily a PvP oriented game, I'm going to discuss the rumors I've heard in this forum
And, of course, regard everything I state as rumor, because while the owner of the page in the above link says he has friends on the inside, of course everything can change before launch
Apparently you will need to choose a primary faction on signing up for the game, but this will not disallow you from playing other factions- there will be a sort of cooldown function to prevent faction-hopping in the middle of a conflict. Important to this is that apparently chat can/will be global, so you will be able to talk to your opponents, regardless of what faction they serve- so no finding out secrets about a planned attack in private/realm chats and then jumping to the other side to help prevent the attack.
Playing into the global chat potential is the retinue system. Not only will you have a race, class, and specialization choice (with 3 specialization trees a la WoW and WAR), but you will also receive points to spend in a "retinue" tree to further distinguish your character from everyone else who plays your class- each point able to add another member to the retinue or make the existing members more powerful.
Here's the kicker: you may have the ability to send your retinue off to attack one of your friends, and here the global chat ties into the game. Build up your retinue, gear them out, make them powerful, send them off to harass one of your real life buddies, and then gloat about how they beat him up at a crucial situation for him
Retinues may also be able to function in a manner similar to standards in WAR Online, giving AoE bonuses, particularly to the NPC soldiers on the battlefield. You may be able to order your retinue to assist in the taking or defending of an objective, providing assistance to the NPC soldiers.
The factions will be separated onto their own planets or mostly their own planets; there will be places that opposing factions can land on your "starting" planet and cause some trouble that you can choose to take care of, or choose to ignore. And then there will be the war worlds, where the whole surface is a battleground covered in objectives, not unlike the RvR lakes of WAR Online with BO's and keeps.
The battlefields will be populated with NPC soldiers who will utilize realistic tactics. If your faction is pushing on an objective, the AI commander will intelligently direct reinforcements to that point in the battle line and actually present a challenge to your group, instead of your 40-80 man zerg just washing over the BO/keep with no problems like in WAR. This presents an opportunity for you to use actual battlefield tactics like feints and flanks to outmaneuver the NPC forces.
The last thing I remember reading about was that the battlefields are not going to be separated by levels. All levels of characters will fight on the same battlefields; on that note, it was mentioned that a level 1 character can kill a max level character... if the max level character went AFK to make a sandwich
So there might not be the large damage reduction we see between disparate character levels like in other MMOs, and the real distinction between high and low level characters will be in the higher power of gear, specialization points, and of course, the retinues. It won't be just a level 1 versus a max level character... it'll be a level 1 versus the max level character and his entire retinue.
So... again, a reminder. These are what I can remember reading of rumors on the above-named site before it became a plain black screen, and the author cited anonymous sources inside Vigil.
